The Directors
Kirby Swinney serves as director of the Shawnee High School Band, a position he has held since 1997. Prior to accepting the position at Shawnee, Swinney was director of bands in Choctaw-Nicoma Park for two years and director of bands in the Dewey Public Schools for ten years. Swinney is a 1978 graduate of Guthrie High School and a 1982 graduate of the University of Oklahoma with a bachelor's degree in music education. He is a past-president of the Oklahoma Bandmasters Association and also serves as 2010-11 chairman of the all-OMEA all-state band committee. He is a member of OMEA/MENC, OBA and Phi Beta Mu.
Jan Steffen has served as assistant band director at Shawnee High School and Shawnee Middle School since 2002. Ms. Steffen was director of bands in the Pond Creek-Hunter school system for 4 years immediately after graduating from Phillips University with a bachelor's degree in music education. After teaching private flute lessons for 18 years while raising three children, Ms. Steffen returned to band directing as an assistant director in the Cushing band program for the four years prior to coming to Shawnee.
John Slish serves as Shawnee Middle School Band Director and Assistant Director at Shawnee High School. Mr. Slish is a graduate of Broken Arrow High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in music education from Oklahoma State University in 2007. Mr. Slish is a percussionist and has performed with the Southwind Drum and Bugle Corps and was a member of the Oklahoma State University Cowboy Marching Band.
